LANDING SHIP, DOCK

Operational use: To transport loaded landing crafts to the landing area, where the hold is flooded and the craft move out under their own power.

Description: An adaptation of the floating dry-dock principle. Landing craft up to the size of LCI (L)'s may be stowed in the well; 2 35-ton cranes service the craft, handle vehicles and cargo.

Capacity: 3 LCT (5) (6) each with 5 medium tanks or 2 LCT (3) (4) each with 12 medium tanks or 14 LCM (3) each with 1 medium tank or 1,500 long tons of cargo or 41 LVT's or 47 DUKW's. Troops, 22 officers, 218 men.

Endurance: 8,000 miles @ 15 knots. Design speed is 17 knots maximum.

Displacement: Light draft 4,032  Draft 8'2½'' for'd 10'½'' aft.
Light service 5,850  Draft 10'8'' for'd 13'8'' aft.
Seagoing (loaded) 7,930  Draft 15'5½'' for'd 16'2'' aft.
