Carrier Squadron, 435th Troop Carrier Group, Ninth Air Force, Langar (Station 490). Crash landed on Ossoms Hill near
Grindon, Staffordshire 13Jan44. The aircraft was flying from Langar (Station 490), near Nottingham, to Base Air Depot ? 1,
Burtonwood (Station 590), near Warrington with a crew of five and four passengers. Half way into the flight while
flying at about 600? above ground level the starboard wing tip “crumpled” up. The two pilots immediately decided to
force land the aircraft. The pilot landed the aircraft on top of Ossoms Hill near Grindon, Derbyshire, the aircraft caused
damaged to three stone walls before coming to a halt. All of the crew and passengers were able to vacate the
aircraft without injury. Examination of the failed wing tip showed that there were scratches on the upper
surface which matched with the first row of heavy rivets on the under side of the wing of all varients of the Dakota.
These marks were probably caused during taxing at Langar and the internal structure of the aircraft had been
weakened causing the eventual failure.

in rain and 70 mph winds after being blown off course while on a heading from Palmdale to Newhall.
Possible downdraft. The action of the pilot in making an instrument letdown without previously
establishing a positive radio fix. This action was aggravated by conditions of severe static,
wind in excess of anticipated velocities, preoccupation with an unusual amount of radio
conversation, and the inoperative Newhall radio range (planecrasinfo.com).

314th Troop Carrier Group, Twelfth Air Force, Licata, Sicily. Sciacca, Sicily 6Oct43. On 8Nov43, thirteen flight
nurses and thirteen medical technicians of the 807th Medical Air Evacuation Squadron were on board when the
plane left Catania together with two other planes and headed for Bari, Italy, a flight of two hours. Shortly after
the planes had left Catania, they came into snow storms. The radio operator onboard of this C-53 could not
make radio contact with the control tower at Bari. The crew decided that they were lost. There was no trace of
the other two planes. After some four hours flying, the weather c1eared. The pilot discovered an airfield and
prepared for a landing. Suddenly the plane was fired upon and the pilot had to make a forced landing with
wheels up in a muddy field. When the plane came to a halt, armed men surrounded it; these men were
partisans and it turned out that the plane had landed in Albania. Luckily the partisans were pro-American.
The men were in a hurry and took the Americans to a safe place. They traveled from village to village and,
together with the partisans, Christmas was celebrated. They all moved on 27Dec43. Soon the Germans were
after the group and they were fired upon. The group could get away, but became separated; three nurses
stayed behind. In the meantime the partisans had contacted the allies and British commandos were
dropped near the group to assist them. The entire group moved in the direction of the coast, where a boat of the
Royal Navy waited for them. The group arrived in Italy on 9Jan44; the three nurses who had been separated
from the group were smuggled to Italy by the partisans and arrived in Italy Mar44.

United States Air Forces in Europe (USAFE), Tulln (R-92), Vienna, Austria. The aircraft was en route from Tulln to Pisa,
Italy 19Nov46. In bad weather, the crew elected to avoid the direct route over the Alps instead heading around the mountains
via Munich, Germany, Strasbourg, Dijon and Marseille, France. The crew became disoriented near
Innsbruck, Austria, narrowly avoiding several alpine peaks, and crash landed on the Gauli Glacier in the
Bernese Alps, Switzerland at an altitude of 10,990 ft (3,350 m). On board were eight passengers (among
them two high-ranking officers of the US armed forces, four women and one 11-year-old girl) and four crew.
Several people were injured, but there were no fatalities. The crew thought the aircraft had crashed in the French Alps.
The aircraft was not located until the morning of 22Nov46 after an epic search and rescue operation, but rescuers
were unable to reach the crash site until the afternoon of 23Nov46. Too late for a safe descent the same day,
the following morning the survivors were taken down to a hut after which they were flown out by a couple of
Fieseler Storch aircraft, the first alpine rescue by aircraft. Aircraft salvaged 17Mar47.
