IX Troop Carrier Command / Missing Air Crew Reports

      Forty-two. That's the number of Douglas C-47s that failed to return from missions flown by IX Troop Carrier Command in Normandy on June 6 and 7, 1944.
   Hit by German flak, with one exception, some aircraft crashed or made forced landings in Normandy, while others were forced to ditch in the English Channel.
   The fates of the crew members of these aircraft varied. Killed in action, wounded, taken prisoner and transferred to a camp in Germany, or, for the luckier ones, returned to their units. Some crews, aided by the French Resistance, eluded German troops for more than 20 days and remained hidden, waiting to reach Allied lines as they advanced.
   The role played by IX Troop Carrier Command during the Normandy landings has very often been overlooked. However, 1,664 sorties were carried out in two days, whether for parachute drops, glider towing or supplying ground troops on the morning of June 7.
   During the execution of this mission, 86 crew members lost their lives.
