IX Troop Carrier Command

La mission du IXth Troop Carrier Command est d'amener
au coeur du Cotentin les parachutistes des deux divisions aéroportées
Américaines, la 82nd et la 101st Airborne. Les transports utilisés
sont le C-47 ainsi que les planeurs Waco CG-4A et Horsa.
Les différents groupes de transport (T.C.G)
sont répartis sur les aérodromes d'Angleterre d'ou
ils vont décoller suivant un planning horaire très
précis.
Depuis leurs bases de départ jusqu'à la côte anglaise des
corridors aériens sont balisés afin de guider les avions jusqu'au
point de rassemblement "ELKO" précédant la traversée
de la manche. Les avions mettent ensuite le cap au Sud-Ouest et quittent la
côte anglaise à hauteur du promontoire de Portland Bill. A partir
de cet instant leur altitude de vol devra être de 500 pieds.
Quatre
minutes après avoir dépassé le point codé
"FLATBUSH" et la côte Anglaise les feux de navigation
ainsi que les lumières à l'intérieur des appareils
sont éteints, seuls subsistent les feux de formation et les
feux orangés de reconnaissance. Le cap est conservé
pendant 57 miles jusqu'à un point codé "HOBOKEN"
et matérialisé par un navire au Nord-Ouest de Guernesey.
Au survol de "HOBOKEN" les avions changent de cap et se
dirigent à présent vers le Sud-Est, vers la côte
du Cotentin. Les feux de reconnaissance orangés sont éteints
et les feux de formation réduits au minimum, la dernière
partie de la traversée s'amorce.
La côte francaise est franchie au dessus du point codé
"MULESHOE" pour la 101st Airborne et du point codé
"PEORIA" pour la 82nd Airborne.
La traversée du Cotentin durera moins de 15 minutes. Dans
quelques instants les parachutistes s'élanceront au dessus
de leur "DZ", au dessus de la Normandie.
